“When you get into a tight place and everything goes against you, till it seems as though you could not hang on a minute longer, never give up then, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn. “
- Harriet Beecher Stowe

Marna has this quality of being able to remember crucial stuff the rest of us are freaked out, tired, or both. She keeps track of race registrations, required gear, and anything else that needs doing. She is also an incredible trooper out on the course...

How Marna got involved with AR

I had been doing triathlons for a few years and some friends I backpacked with kept trying to get me into adventure racing.  We talked about doing races but somehow it never quite worked out.  Then in January 2005, at around midnight under a bright moon while trekking through the jungle of Costa Rica a friend and I made a promise that we would do an adventure race during the coming year.  That is not a promise you break!  My first race was the Winteroba in Washington and I have been hooked ever since!

Most memorable racing moment

During the Adventure Extreme Durango 24 hr race, after 12 hours of trekking (which was supposed to take 6 hours), we realized that due to weather and timing we would not be advancing further in the race which was disappointing.  Our team sat down for a break in a beautiful meadow and had a “picnic”.  We rationed our remaining food so each of us ate a Hammer endurolyte pill and two jelly beans.  We didn’t have much but it lifted our spirits and we continued on to the transition area with new energy.  We were laughing and enjoying the moment which is one of the things I love about adventure racing – the highs and lows and knowing that right around the corner is a picnic waiting to happen.
